  Evan the Better Students Need Help Preparing for College
 

     Advanced Placement (AP) courses are college-level classes designed to prepare students for college level work while allow ing students to earn college credit.  The curriculum and testing for all AP courses are organized by the College Board, the organization that is also responsible for the SAT tests (link for College Board AP Central).  Students participating in an AP course experience the intellectual rigor and expectations of a college level course, but in the more controlled and supportive atmosphere of a daily high school class room.  Students improve their reading and writing skills, enhance their problem-solving techniques, and develop study skills necessary for mastering difficult intellectual concepts.  Participation in an AP class also enhances a student's college applicatin process, demonstrating maturity, ambition, and readiness for college.  

     Each AP course has a corresponding exam that is conducted world-wide in the early part of May.  A student's college credit is dependent on the results of the exam and not on any class grade.

    Blake High School currently has approximately 20 AP courses available to students either as in house classes or as on-line classes.  In selecting one or more AP classes, each student should consider their current interests, extracurricular time constraints, and future educational goals.  Students should consider carefully the specific AP courses they enroll in and the total number of AP classes in their schedule.  AP classes are typically more difficult and time consuming then other high school classes so students should make available the time necessary to be successful in all of the AP classes they decide to enroll in.  Time devoted to class work in and out of class is directly related to performance on the AP exams.
